Fiji beach resorts are amongst the most popular in the world and are scattered throughout the islands, some on tiny coral atolls, others in remote spots tucked into the tropical rainforest. There is no concentration where properties sit next door to each other. Most sit alongside shallow lagoons protected by coral reefs which are good for snorkelling, although most have only gentle waves are not all offer good swimming.
Viti Levu
It is often said that the main island of Viti Levu has few beaches. This is quite untrue - in fact, explore the coastline and you will find some truly wonderful beach settings - Natadola & Cuvu are amongst the best in the country and on Nananu-i-Ra off the north coast you'll find several outstanding beaches. The beaches along the Coral Coast are picturesque but most have poor swimming, especially at low tide when the lagoon is only ankle deep. Most resorts, both large and small. The beaches around Nadi Airport and Suva are disappointing although north of Suva there are a couple of lovely secluded beach locations as well as unusual wild black sand beaches.

Mamanuca Islands
The Mamanuca Islands account for about 20 islands in all, mostly small hilly islands with grassy ridges and sweeping beaches. Situated off the coast of Nadi and accessible by boat (20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes) or plane (10 minutes), this is the commercial heart of Fiji beach tourism and most islands have now been taken over by a resort whose white sandy beaches are swept clean by hotel staff each morning for perfection. The focus here is on beachside cocktail bars and lots of water activities, particularly sail boats, kayaks, snorkelling and para-sailing. There are also a number of tiny palm-fringed coral islands, most with upmarket resorts but a few still deserted which can be visited on a day cruise from Nadi.

Yasawa Islands
The Yasawa chain of volcanic sun drenched islands has the best beaches in Fiji for exploring and daydreaming. There are over 20 islands in all, the closest reached by fast catamaran ferry in 2 hours from Nadi, with about 35 budget beach resorts, one mid range beach resort and a couple of upmarket resorts to choose from. The beaches of the Yasawas are the main itinerary of luxury overnight cruises.

Southern Islands
Vatulele Island has some excellent fine white sandy beaches in secluded tropical surroundings. Kadavu and Beqa have quite rugged coastlines. There are some nice beaches here, but they are generally difficult to get to. Better known as a dive and surf destination.

Northern Islands
Some very attractive beaches backed by lush tropical rainforest, particularly on Matangi and Qamea and on several small luxury island resorts off Vanua Levu. The larger islands of Taveuni and Vanua Levu have few good beaches between them although there are several spots where dive resorts have located alongside an attractive tropical coastline.

Lomaiviti Group
Ovalau, the main centre for Eco-tourism in the Lomaiviti Group, does not have any good beaches. Off Ovalau are a handful of small islands with very attractive beaches and a few small resorts, notably Toberua Island and Caqalai island which both have small resorts. Most of the other islands in the Lomaiviti Group have secluded beaches but few offer accommodation and are difficult to get to.
