Fiji Islands is a collection of over 300 islands divided into eight groups, although the Polynesian island of Rotuma and the Lau Group are so remote that few visitors ever make it that far. Of the five main groups, travel between them is straight forward and distances not too great. A flight from Viti Levu to the Northern Group for example takes just 45 minutes.
Viti Levu is the main island with almost two thirds of the population. Over 100,000 people live in the capital Suva on the wet windward side of the island (south east), although the city offers little tourist interest. The international airport at Nadi, by contrast, is a small tourist town surrounded by sugar cane fields on the dry west coast. Viti Levu is an excellent holiday base with lots of day tours exploring the rural interior and its rainforest and for sailing cruises.
The Western Group is the most popular destination and the closest to islands to Nadi Airport. The Mamanuca Islands is a collection of tiny coral atolls in crystal clear lagoons and the Yasawa Islands has beautiful secluded beaches.
